Reflection- Dec 2016
My final piece this semester was based off the theme of childhood to adulthood. I wanted to convey how people rush through childhood and grow up too fast. To show my message in my piece, I had a child sitting in an office with a playground outside her window. In regards to the composition of the piece, I decided to put the girl in the lower third of the piece to give off the impression that she was a small child in a large world. She is in color but everything except her eyes are done in very light and lifeless color. I tried to convey the idea that she wasn’t fully alive because of the light color. I drew the eyes very bright because I wanted them to be focal point because of how much eyes convey about a persons’ emotion. I made the office black and white to display how boring and unhappy she is. The office is a representation of her life as an adult. The window behind her is also in black and white except for the playground. The merry-go-round is in primary colors to show how childhood is the starting points in life.
My pieces are all connected through my use of color. All of my pieces have elements that are in grayscale and elements that are in full color. I play with the use color to create focal points that emphasis the meaning of the piece.
Studying Paul Cezanne this semester really helped me get my art in perspective. When researching his life, I came across some stuff he said. Most of the quotes had a common theme. Some stressed how difficult art is and others mentioned how rewarding art can be but I ended up realizing how important it was to continue to create art, especially because it is difficult. The theme I found within his quotes was that art is a way of self discovery because of all the ups and downs it has.
In the beginning of the year, I was scared to take this class. I still am scared about all the requirements IB has but I am less stressed about my skill level. After completing 4 pieces in this class, I have started to realize that I don’t need to get everything perfect. I have spent days stressing about the smallest details but art isn’t about the smallest details, it’s about the meaning. I learned I need to focus more on the big picture and not perfecting all the different techniques. Not that technique isn’t important, I just don’t need to stress over it as much.
